Started to overheat after a trip to an ORV park but I washed the radiator out and its pretty clean on the outside. Higher speeds didn't help cool it off. In older vehicles that had questionable cooling fans, you could just drive 50-60 and the airflow through radiator was enough to keep your engine happy. Use one of the lines you removed to run it in a loop and bypass the heater core. If this solves the overheating problem then there is a block in the heater core. When I started actually paying close attention to it the needle was staying at the third little hash mark on the gauge (so technical right). yeah, the middle is a bit high for the 3.6L especially if you are driving. But like you, normal temps for my 3.6 is just slightly above the 1/4 line.
